How to host a Quake III Arena dedicated server

Running Quake III yourself means finding a working server build, copying your game files onto a box, opening a port and writing a config. On 2hours.gg you pick a mode and a map and the server does the rest.

What you get

  • Every original map: Free For All, Duel, Team Deathmatch and CTF, each with its own map rotation, from The Longest Yard to the Pro maps.
  • CPMA modes: Challenge ProMode Arena comes installed: CPMA Duel, CPMA CTF, Clan Arena, Freeze Tag and InstaGib CTF.
  • Bots: Bots keep the arena busy from the first minute and leave one by one as your friends join.
  • Web console: Change the map or gametype, add bots and set limits from your browser while you play.

How friends join

  • Console: Press the key below Esc, left of 1 (~ on a US keyboard), to open the console and paste the connect line from your server card.
  • Password: On a private server, the connect line on your card starts with password YOURPASSWORD, so one paste does both.
  • Any client: The Steam version, ioquake3 and Quake3e all connect. In the menu, use Multiplayer, then Specify, and enter the address.

Playing a CPMA mode

Everyone needs CPMA and its map pack installed before joining a CPMA mode. Both are free from playmorepromode.com. Unzip the CPMA mod into your Quake III folder and the map pack into your baseq3 folder, then connect as usual.
