Online Quake has always run on QuakeWorld, and that is what a 2hours.gg Quake server runs: mvdsv with the KTX mod, like the servers the QuakeWorld scene plays on. Here is how to get a client, connect and run your server.
Get a QuakeWorld client
Steam's Quake launches the 2021 remaster, which cannot join QuakeWorld servers. You need a free QuakeWorld client that uses your Steam game files:
- In Steam, right click Quake, then Manage, then Browse local files, and open the id1 folder (not rerelease). It holds pak0.pak and pak1.pak.
- Download the nQuake client installer for your system from nquake.com and run it. Skip the optional extras.
- If the game says a map is missing, copy
pak1.pakfrom Steam's id1 folder into the nQuake id1 folder, next to its pak0.pak.
How to connect
- Console: Open it with the key below Esc, left of 1, and paste the connect line from your server card, for example
connect 203.0.113.7:27500. - Password: On a private server, the line on your card starts with
password YOURPASSWORD;so one paste does both. - Your name: Type
name YourNamein the console. - The slash: Once you are in a match, start every console command with /. Without it, the line goes to everyone as chat.
Modes
- Free For All: Everyone against everyone on the classic deathmatch maps.
- Duel, 2on2 and 4on4: The competitive QuakeWorld formats. KTX starts the match when every player has typed /ready.
- Bots: Type
/botcmd enable(the map restarts), then/botcmd addbot 10for each bot, with a skill from 0 to 20. Bots run on dm3, dm4, dm6 and e1m2. - Maps: dm1 to dm6 and the episode maps, picked when you deploy or changed later with rcon.
Run your server with rcon
The rcon password on your server card makes you the admin. Use the web console in your browser, or the game console:
/cl_crypt_rcon 0: once, in nQuake or ezQuake. They encrypt rcon by default, and the server answers Bad rcon_password./rcon_password YOURRCONPASSWORD: log in./rcon status: everyone connected./rcon map dm4: change map.
