Custom Workshop maps on a Killing Floor 2 server

Killing Floor 2 has a real Steam Workshop for maps, and the delivery is nicer than most games: the server downloads the map and hands it to each player when they connect. Nobody has to subscribe or download anything first, they just join.

Add a Workshop map

  1. Find the map on the Steam Workshop and copy the numeric id from its URL (the ?id= number).
  2. Paste that id into the Workshop map field on the deploy page.
  3. Deploy. The server subscribes to the map, downloads it, and boots straight into it. Players get it automatically on join.

The one catch: unranked

Running any custom content makes the server unranked, so players earn no perk XP on a custom map. That is a Tripwire rule. Your existing perk levels live on your Steam account and are never affected. If perk XP matters for the session, stick to the official maps.

Good to know

  • Use a map (a KF- item), not a mutator id, in the Workshop map field. The server boots into the first map you give it.
  • Big custom maps take a moment to reach a new player the first time they connect, then it is cached.
