Playing custom Left 4 Dead 2 campaigns (everyone must subscribe)

You can run any custom Left 4 Dead 2 campaign from the Steam Workshop on a 2hours.gg server, from classics like Warcelona and I Hate Mountains to horror sets like Silent Hill. There's one rule that's different from CS2, and it's the single most common reason people can't join: in L4D2, the server cannot send the campaign to players. Everyone has to subscribe to it on Steam themselves.

⚠ Everyone must subscribe

Every player who wants to join, including you, must be subscribed to the exact same Workshop campaign on Steam before connecting. A player who isn't subscribed will fail to load the map and get dropped. This is a Valve limitation (the server can't transfer custom .bsp files to clients), not something we can work around.

The flow

  1. On the deploy page, open the Map picker and go to the Workshop tab. Pick a featured campaign, or paste any Steam Workshop URL / ID.
  2. Send everyone the campaign link and have them click Subscribe on Steam (and let it finish downloading in their L4D2 add-ons). You get a one-click share link on the server card after deploying.
  3. Once everyone is subscribed, connect. The host boots straight into the custom campaign.

Single-file campaigns only

Pick a campaign that ships as one Workshop item. Some older campaigns are split into several parts (map 1, map 2, …) or bundled as a collection; those need every part subscribed, which is fragile for a group. The campaigns we feature in the picker are all single-file, popular, and safe.

Why CS2 is different

On CS2, the server downloads the workshop map and streams it to anyone who joins, so nobody has to subscribe. L4D2 doesn't support that for custom campaigns, which is why the deploy page keeps reminding you to get everyone subscribed first.
